UWA to Relocate Rhinos to Ajai & Kidepo

Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) confirms the plans underway to move some of the Rhinos from Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary to Ajai Wildlife Reserve and Kidepo Valley National Park.

“We are in consultations with communities neighboring Ajai and creating necessary awareness before the reintroduction,” said Sam Mwandha.

Speaking during a media engagement at Skyz Hotel yesterday, the Uganda Wildlife Authority Executive Director said that whereas the Rhinos at Ziwa ranch are of the southern white, plans for the long run, include Uganda Wildlife Authority reintroducing the black rhinos back to these areas of Ajai Wildlife Reserve and Kidepo Valley National Park.

Mr. Mwandha also said that Uganda Wildlife Authority was in discussions with Total Energies over the plans to re-introduce black rhinos into Murchison Falls National Park. “All indications are that Total Energies Uganda will provide the necessary support to undertake this activity” he added.

The Executive Director of Uganda Wildlife Authority, Sam Mwandha also revealed that for Kidepo Valley National Park, the authority is discussing with the Northern Rangeland Trust of Kenya possible support for the development of a sanctuary within the park, and then translocation.

We therefore, with this conservation and awareness programs we expect the number to tourists to increase in our parks like Kidepo Valley National Park with the confidence of spotting this rare and loved African big5 in Africa.
